From Vine Sensation to Global Icon: The Story Behind Shawn Mendes’ First Song, “Life of the Party”
Long before he was selling out stadiums worldwide, headlining global charts, and shaping modern pop music, Shawn Mendes was just a teenager sitting in his bedroom in Pickering, Ontario, strumming a guitar and posting six-second clips on the short-form video app Vine.
When he transitioned from internet phenomenon to bonafide recording artist, the music world watched closely to see if he was just a passing digital trend or a real artist. The answer came in the form of his debut single, “Life of the Party”.
The Release and Record-Breaking Debut
Released on June 26, 2014, via Island Records, “Life of the Party” served as the lead single from The Shawn Mendes EP and was later featured on his official debut studio album, Handwritten (2015).
Written by Ido Zmishlany and Scott Harris, the track is an acoustic-pop ballad centered around teenage insecurity, authenticity, and the pressure to fit in. Lines like “We don’t have to be ordinary / Make your best mistakes” resonated deeply with his rapidly growing fanbase.
