From Blueprint Dreams to Global Stardom: The Life and Early Days of Song Kang Before the Fame
Long before he earned the title of the “Son of Netflix” or melted hearts in massive hit dramas like Love Alarm, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a regular guy trying to figure out his path.
Examining the journey of South Korea’s beloved actor reveals a fascinating look at who he was, what he dreamed of, and how he stepped into the spotlight.
1. Unexpected Childhood Dreams: Architecture and Design
Before the silver screen ever crossed his mind, Song Kang had a completely different aesthetic career in mind. Growing up in Suwon, South Korea, he was captivated by striking visuals and design.
As a child, he famously dreamed of becoming an architect or a furniture designer after seeing inspiring photographs of buildings and interior spaces. However, that dream hit a roadblock when reality set in: he realized he had “no idea where he needed to start” mathematically or educationally to pursue architecture. Fortunately for K-drama fans worldwide, he pivoted toward a different kind of artistry.
2. The Movie Moment That Changed Everything
What spark actually ignited his passion for acting? Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic.
Song Kang has shared in interviews that watching DiCaprio’s iconic performance in the 1997 cinematic masterpiece left him utterly mesmerized. The depth of emotion on screen planted a seed in his mind, making him wonder what it would feel like to evoke those kinds of powerful feelings in an audience. That inspiration eventually led him to enroll in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University, the same prestigious alma mater as other famous stars (including BTS member Jin).
3. Turning Down the K-Pop Idol Track
Given his striking height (1.86m / over 6 feet) and model-esque visuals, it comes as no surprise that the entertainment industry came knocking early.
Before making his official acting debut, Song Kang was scouted multiple times by K-pop idol agencies. In an era where many young Korean trainees cross over from idol groups into acting, Song Kang stood his ground. He turned down the idol offers because his heart was set entirely on acting, choosing to focus solely on his studies and dramatic training.
4. Humble Beginnings and Paying Dues
Song Kang officially stepped onto the entertainment scene in 2017, landing a supporting role in the tvN romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover. He followed this up with a role in the weekend family drama Man in the Kitchen.
Before landing his breakout role, he also spent time building his versatility in the public eye:
- Variety Shows: He showed his bright, slightly clumsy, and endearing personality as a fixed cast member on the variety show Village Survival, the Eight.
- Hosting: He served as an MC for the popular music program Inkigayo from 2018 to 2019, rubbing shoulders with top K-pop acts and sharpening his live-broadcast skills.
5. The Audition That Changed History
The turning point of his career happened when he beat out 900 other hopefuls to secure the role of Hwang Sun-oh in Netflix’s adaptation of the webtoon Love Alarm (2019). Overnight, his follower count skyrocketed, and the doors to global stardom flew wide open.
