How to Add Your Own Music to Spotify: The Complete Guide
Have you ever found a rare remix, a live concert recording, or an original song you produced yourself that isn’t available on Spotify’s official library? Fortunately, Spotify features a built-in Local Files function that lets you blend your personal audio tracks right in with your daily playlists.
Whether you want to listen on your computer or sync those tracks to your phone, here is a step-by-step walkthrough to get your personal music playing on Spotify.
Step 1: Prep Your Music Files
Before diving into the Spotify settings, you need to make sure your audio files are ready:
- Supported Formats: Spotify primarily supports MP3, MP4, and M4P files. (Note: Apple’s lossless M4A or FLAC files often won’t show up natively without converting them to MP3 first).
- Organize a Folder: Create a dedicated folder on your computer (for example, named “Spotify Local Music”) and drop your audio tracks inside. Keeping them organized here prevents broken file paths later.
Step 2: Import Files via the Desktop App
The Local Files feature must first be configured on a computer (Windows or Mac), as the web player does not support it.
- Open the Spotify desktop app and log into your account.
- Click on your profile picture or icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
- Toggle on the switch that says Show Local Files.
- Once turned on, an Add a Source button will appear. Click it and select the folder where you stored your music in Step 1.
Your music is now imported! You can find your tracks by heading to Your Library on the left sidebar and clicking into the Local Files folder.
Step 3: Add Your Tracks to a Playlist
To actually listen to your local music easily (and prep it for your phone), you need to add it to a playlist:
- Go to your Local Files folder within Spotify.
- Create a new playlist or right-click your local songs and choose Add to playlist.
- Drop them into a custom playlist of your choice.
Step 4: Sync Your Music to Your Phone (iOS & Android)
Want to listen to your custom tracks on the go? You can sync them from your computer to your mobile device using your home network:
- Check Your Wi-Fi: Make sure your computer and your phone are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
- Log In: Open the Spotify app on your phone and ensure you are logged into the same account.
- Turn on Mobile Local Files:
- On Android: Go to Settings and privacy > scroll down to Apps and devices and toggle on Local audio files.
- On iOS: Go to Settings and privacy > Local Files and toggle on Show audio files from this device.
- Download the Playlist: Open the playlist on your phone that contains your local tracks, and tap the Download button (the down-arrow icon).
Give it a moment, and the files will transfer over your local network. Soon enough, your custom tracks will stream right from your mobile device!
Troubleshooting Quick Tips
- Tracks grayed out or won’t play? This usually means the file format isn’t supported, or the original file was moved from its folder on your computer.
- Won’t sync to phone? Double-check that both devices are truly on the same Wi-Fi network and that your desktop app is open while downloading the playlist.
